Vera Wang has admitted that she was ‘shocked’ by the reaction to her physique at 70.

The designer went viral earlier this year after showing off her toned abs and long legs in a crop top and shorts, with fans stunned to discover she is in her seventh decades.

And it turns out that Vera was expecting us to focus on her hair clips in the picture instead.

Speaking to People, the 71-year-old said: ‘I was totally shocked. To be perfectly honest, the real goal of that picture was [to feature] the hair clips I had in my hair. And hair clips don’t exactly show up that well in a picture.

‘So we really had to minimise whatever I was wearing and to keep the focus on my hair and those crystal clips. And the fact it became about my Palm Angels workout top was so crazy.’

She added: ‘I always thought of myself as somebody who, in all fairness, was the creator and not the subject matter. So it was sort of shocking. I can’t lie to you.’

The queen of all things bridal was trending for days back in May after her chiselled body had people stunned, with tweets claiming that Vera was decades younger than her real age.

Vera credits her figure to vodka cocktails and muscle memory from her former career as an athlete (Picture: Instagram)

Vera brilliantly explained that ‘work, sleep, not too much sun and a vodka cocktail’ were the keys to her timeless appearance.

But unfortunately for us all, exercise also plays a part – although Vera insists her workouts are only ‘sporadic’.

The red carpet legend credits ‘muscle memory’ for keeping her body in check, after training as a competitive figure skater when she was younger and dancing at the Balanchine School of American Ballet.

So maybe don’t depend on the vodka cocktails to keep you looking good, as fun as that may sound.

Vera turned 71 in June and the killer Instagram snaps have just kept coming, with our particular favourite being the designer’s offering for Halloween.

She decided to emulate Cher for some ‘Studio 54 realness’ in a sequinned orange mini-skirt and a matching bandeau top, and we were all Vanessa Hudgens as the actress commented: ‘Absolute iconnnn.’
