ASOS reveals exactly what happens to items you return

Just think about the number of times you’ve ordered something in two sizes because you weren’t sure of which to go for, or ordered four dresses in the hope that one will work for your event – we’ve all done it.

If retailers didn’t have rigorous returns processes to make stuff sellable again, there’d be heaps of landfill from unsuitable and unworn items alone.

Granting a behind-the-scenes look at the life of an ASOS returns package, their Senior Creative Jess Cheng has put together a video to show each step of a garment being made ready to sell again.

Not wanting to contribute to landfill with their returns, the ASOS team first inspect packages once received.

‘Anything that needs repairing goes to one of our onsite tailors,’ Jess says, showing that things needing to be fixed will get the necessary treatment before being added back to the website.

Then garments are pressed and steamed to take out any creases, as demoed on a shirt in the clip.

The item then hung in their drying cabinet.

They take care with the returns process so they can fulfil their waste policy, as Jess says that 97% of returned items go onto be resold.

‘And the remaining 3%? Well, it gets sent to some of our partners so it can be recycled or reused,’ she adds.

‘So it can go on living a happy second life.’

Fast fashion retailers such as ASOS have been under fire as the trend for sustainable fashion has continued to gain momentum over the last year as our lives and needs for new clothing slowed down.

As a result, the brand have made an effort to both showcase their existing efforts to make garments go further and to improve messaging, as seen with their Buy Now Pay Later products.

So now you know what happens once you’ve made a trip to the post office.
