Searching for a job is hard at the best of times, especially when you feel like there are no roles that match your expertise.
Gone are the days where people pounded the pavements with CVs to hand in, often getting a job in a day or two. These days, it’s all about online networking and knowing where to look.
It’s explained in the video: ‘The hidden job market is so real. Over 60% of jobs are never officially posted online, and the only way you can find out about them is if you network or already know someone who works at the company.’
It effectively means that traditional job boards don’t actually show all the roles available, with many slipping through the cracks on social media or through word of mouth.
However, the helpful folks at LVL Up have a handy trick to see more positions suitable for you.
All you need is a LinkedIn account.
They advise that you search ‘hiring’ followed by the name of the role you’re interested in. In this case, they used ‘hiring project manager’.
Next, filter your search to posts only, and filter by industry if you’re not seeing what you’re after.
This allows you to see the jobs posted by hiring managers on their own feeds rather than as an official listing, and means you have a direct contact with the person recruiting.
LVL Up then recommends sending a courteous message asking more about the role, as well as giving a brief overview of your qualifications.
Their video has now been viewed over 3.5 million times, with comments pouring in from surprised jobseekers who couldn’t believe they’d never tried it before.
‘As an ex recruiter, yes yes yes,’ said one.
Another wrote: ‘Pro tip omg thanks.’
Unfortunately many roles still require you to already know about them, but this easy hack gives you a wider picture about what’s available. You might just get that dream job after all.
