Bread and butter are the ultimate in simple pleasures.
And, of course, butter with a sandwich goes without saying… right?
A British traveller has realised that, across the pond, this just isn’t the case.
Our transatlantic friends don’t appear to be familiar with the buttery layer in their famous sandwiches.
A guy mentioned on the Reddit site CasualUK that the sandwich his father received in the US was out of the ordinary.
The poster, who shared a photo of the sandwich in question, claimed that his father was surprised after requesting for it to be “buttered.”
The man realised his bread was slathered with butter on the exterior rather than the interior when he received his sando.

Sharing the bizarre snap, they wrote: ‘They don’t butter their sandwiches across the pond. This is what happened when my dad asked for his to be buttered.’
The intriguing post has since received over 13,000 likes, with many people expressing their surprise.
However, some Americans have chimed in to confirm that buttered bread is not common in the United States.
One person said: ‘No we don’t. I’m an American and I don’t know why Reddit showed me this subreddit but here I am and here’s your comment and no, we don’t butter our sandwiches.
‘Just to make it clear I too butter my breakfast sandwiches. I’m talking lunch/deli style sandwiches here.
‘Nobody I’ve never met is buttering the bread on their turkey and lettuce sandwiches.’
So, like squash, it appears that our American friends are unfamiliar with the UK’s culinary autopilots.
Although, having lately discovered the modest crisp sandwich, they may soon follow in our footsteps with butter on the inside.
