Star-studded rock opera Annette, from the minds of brothers Ron and Russell Mael – aka pop duo Sparks – is soon to release in cinemas.

Following a standing ovation after its premiere at Cannes Film Festival in July, anticipation has been building around this whimsical but dark musical.

The long-gestating project first got the ball rolling in 2016, when Holy Motors director Leos Carax came onboard to make his English-language film debut.

Amazon Studios then acquired the film in 2017 and in the interim Rooney Mara, Michelle Williams and Rihanna were all attached before filming finally got underway in late summer 2019.

With its release date just around the corner, we’re here with your Annette 101.

Who is in the Annette cast?

Star Wars favourite Adam Driver leads the cast, having been in talks for the movie since 2016, as Avant Garde comedian Henry McHenry.

He is joined by La Vie en Rose Oscar winner and Inception star Marion Cotillard as his wife, popular opera singer Ann Defrasnoux.

The third major character is portrayed by The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg, who takes on the role of The Accompanist, a colleague of Ann’s.

In Annette, Helberg shows off his natural musical ability as a gifted pianist, something which was first featured prominently in Florence Foster Jenkins in his part as Jenkins’ (Meryl Streep) accompanist Cosmé McMoon.

All three actors sing (and well!) during the movie, which features music by Sparks, who also pop up in opening number So May We Start.

For her opera tracks, Cotillard had bolstering in post-production from opera singer Catherine Trottmann.

In a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Helberg, having admitted to pretending to have a French passport so he could be cast in the film, praised his co-stars.

‘These were people who I wanted to work with so badly, and the coming together of that crew I knew was something that would never happen [again],’ he explained. ‘And I was such an enormous fan of theirs.’

When is the Annette UK release date?

Annette is set to release in cinemas on September 3.

Theatrical distributor and global streaming service MUBI acquired the rights to Annette for the UK and Ireland.

After its run in cinemas, Annette will then be available on the MUBI streaming service from November 26.

Remaining spoiler-free, Annette tells the tale of an all-consuming relationship between edgy and provocative comedian Henry McHenry and feted opera singer Ann Defrasnoux. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple.

With the birth of their first child, an unusual daughter with an exceptional destiny, named Annette (portrayed by a wooden marionette puppet), their lives are turned upside down. As cracks begin to show and tragedy strikes, the film darkens as its characters struggle with jealousy, grief and love.

Annette is almost entirely sung-through, with very little spoken dialogue, and the eclectic music, courtesy of Sparks, ranges in style from rock, opera, electronic and pop.

The songs’ literal lyrics contribute to Annette’s distinct feel and include earworms like We Love Each Other So Much, So May We Start and I’m an Accompanist.
