Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly set to return as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3, alongside Tom Holland.

The actor will reprise his role for the third instalment, seemingly taking over from Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man as Peter Parker’s mentor, following his death in Avengers: Endgame, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the first film, Homecoming, Tony Stark acted as a father figure and mentor to Peter, while the second, Far From Home, saw Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) take on the role.

The movie is set for release in 2021, with Tom reprising his role, alongside Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds).

It seems the third movie will be star-studded, after it was also reported that Jamie Foxx is in ‘final talks’ to reprise his role as Electro.

The actor had previously portrayed the super-villain in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014 – when Sony Pictures had the rights to the Marvel Comics character – with Andrew Garfield playing Spidey.

Filming for the movie was set to begin in July, but got postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with many other films and TV shows also having to shut down production.

And that came after Spidey’s future in the MCU was left completely uncertain following a dispute between Marvel and Sony – although thankfully it was settled, with the character remaining in the movies.

Speaking to Yahoo! Entertainment, Tom recalled the discussions he’d had with Disney and Sony and said: ‘It was a huge learning curve for me and I was very, very grateful that the two studios allowed me to be a part of that process.’

‘I’m so glad that we were able to do it because I think Spider-Man is now where he belongs, he’s home in the MCU and I’m so grateful that I get to keep playing him in that place,’ he added.

Shooting is now expected to begin by the end of 2020, and wrap up in February 2021.

Benedict has been playing Doctor Strange since the the release of the first instalment in 2016.

He returned for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, and is set to star in the 2022 Marvel movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Disney and reps for Benedict Cumberbatch for comment.

Spider-Man 3 is slated for release on December 17, 2021.
