Chadwick Boseman to star alongside Viola Davis in final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom as cast pay tribute

Chadwick Boseman’s final film, Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, is set to be released this year.

The Black Panther star has tragically died following a battle with cancer, with his family announcing the devastating news.

The actor is known for his iconic roles in the likes of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, 21 Bridges and Da 5 Bloods, and had also finished filming on the adaptation of the 1982 play by August Wilson.

Starring alongside Viola Davis, Chadwick is set to play Levee, one of Ma Rainey’s (Davis) band players, a trumpeter who dreams of having his own band.

The film will also star Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Jonny Coyne, Taylour Paige, and Michael Potts.

While no specific release date has been confirmed, the movie is slated for release this year.

Viola, who will be starring in the movie alongside the iconic actor, penned a moving message following his death.

She wrote: ‘Chadwick…..no words to express my devastation of losing you. Your talent, your spirit, your heart, your authenticity……..It was an honor working beside you, getting to know you….Rest well prince…May flights of angels sing thee to thy heavenly rest. I love you!’

Glynn shared a photo of himself with Chadwick, writing: ‘When I listen to the rain I’ll hear you. R.I.P. my talented friend,’ while Michael added: ‘Just devastating. Rest in Power, my friend, my King.’

Meanwhile, Netflix penned: ‘A hero in every sense. Rest in power to Chadwick Boseman whose gifts will live on forever.’

Chadwick tragically died after being diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016, and battling it as it progressed to stage four.

His family announced the devastating news, writing: ‘It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman.⁣

‘Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. ⁣

‘A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. ⁣

⁣’It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. ⁣

‘He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. ⁣

‘The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.’

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is slated for release on Netflix this year.
