Cher’s iconic plaid suit in Amy Heckerling’s beloved 90s film Clueless almost wasn’t yellow – and if that wasn’t enough, the costume is now missing.
Yep, we’re totally buggin’ as well.
Alicia Silverstone’s notorious Dolce & Gabbana ensemble took the world by storm when the movie debuted in 1995 and just a quick look at the annual autumn/winter fashion shows proves its legacy and influence still lives on to this day, not to mention Iggy Azalea’s Fancy video.
According to the film’s costume designer Mona May, the journey to discover Cher’s yellow number was one of trials and errors.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk as the hit flick heads to NOW TV and prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Mona revealed Alicia tried on two other colours before slipping into the one we all know and love.
‘The yellow suit that she wore, it was such an important first day of school outfit,’ Mona told us. ‘We knew the scene was going to take part in the quad and that it was going to be green with a lot of flowers and a lot of people crossing.
‘We had to see her and she had to stand out.’
Recalling the fitting, Mona said: ‘We knew we wanted to do plaid because plaid was so quintessential as school uniform. We had a blue suit in the fitting and it was really beautiful with her blonde hair but it was just flat, we knew it wouldn’t pop.
‘We had a red one and it was gorgeous but it felt she was trying too hard and a bit too Christmassy. It just wasn’t right. And then we had the yellow.’
It turned out the third suit was indeed the charm, and once Alicia put the yellow ensemble on, everything fell into place. It was, as Mona calls it, ‘exuberant’.
‘The moment she put that suit on, it was like that very organic moment where we knew that yellow was going to stand out in that scene,’ she smiled. ‘No matter how many people who would walk across, she would look like a ray of sunshine.’
Despite Cher’s yellow suit being one of the most iconic pieces in teen flick history, its location today remains a total mystery. Yep readers, the piece has completely vanished into the abyss.
‘It’s gone,’ Mona told us, with a forlorn expression. ‘It’s the saddest thing in my life. We really don’t know where it is.
‘Some of the clothes Alicia had and some, Paramount had. It’s so devastating to me because there are a lot of exhibits and I’m just not included because we don’t have the costume.’
In celebration of Clueless turning 25, the film is now available to stream on NOW TV.
‘I’m so happy to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary and being able to stream it into all the homes is just amazing,’ Mona added.
The transcendent teen flick Clueless turns 25 this year. Clueless is available to watch now on streaming service NOW TV, with a Sky Cinema Pass for £11.99.
