Colin Farrell so unrecognisable as Penguin his The Batman co-star Jeffrey Wright didn’t know he was on set

Colin Farrell as Penguin

Colin Farrell as Penguin has got us all rattled

Colin Farrell has truly mesmerised the lot of us with his turn as Penguin in The Batman – so much so his co-star Jeffrey Wright didn’t even recognise him on set.

Last week, when The Batman trailer dropped at the recent DC Fandome event we all did a double take at the sight of the latest villain to challenge the Caped Crusader (played by Robert Pattinson).

While past Penguins – such as Danny DeVito – still somewhat look like their real-life actors, Colin is essentially another person.

Thankfully we don’t feel too dim for wondering whether some rogue had played Penguin while Colin got his name in the credits and a day off set instead, as Jeffrey – who plays Commissioner Gordon – revealed he too was speechless by Colin’s prosthetics.

Speaking to SiriuxFM over the weekend, he said: ‘I’ve worked with that makeup artist before and it’s just incredible. Colin walked onto set one day and I walked right past him.’

He went on: ‘I was like, “okay, hey, what’s happening? Where’s Colin? Are we going to shoot?” It was pretty remarkable.’

We’ll say.

In fact, we were so doubting of the trickery behind Penguin’s work, that the make-up artist behind the look had to confirm that, yes, that was Colin doing his day job and not phoning it in for the understudy.

‘If you haven’t seen it yet check out Matt Reeves teaser trailer for The Batman,’ Mike Marino of the Prosthetic Renaissance Make-up-FX studio wrote on Instagram, along with a few snaps of the Penguin and hashtagged Colin’s name.

Hey, while we may not recognise him in the film, he already has a former Penguin’s stamp of approval in the form of his Dumbo co-star Danny.

Danny, who played Cobblepot in Batman Returns, told Collider: ‘Colin’s a great actor… He’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him for many years and I think he’s going to do a great job as the Penguin. It’s going to be really interesting to see his take on it.’

The Batman is in cinemas in 2021.
