Parts of Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness have been rewritten after Benedict Cumberbatch was due to make a cameo in WandaVision.

The Disney+ series, starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda and Paul Bettany as Vision, had fans gripped right up to the heartbreaking finale, which set up the next Doctor Strange movie.

Many fans were hoping to see the witch and sorcerer come face-to-face by the end of the unconventional series, but it wasn’t to be.

However, Marvel boss Kevin Feige has revealed Strange was originally meant to have a role – but he feared it would take attention away from Wanda.

‘Some people might say, “Oh, it would’ve been so cool to see Dr. Strange,”‘ he told Rolling Stone.

‘But it would have taken away from Wanda, which is what we didn’t want to do. We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditised to go to the next movie — here’s the white guy, “Let me show you how power works.”‘

The decision meant that parts of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness had to be rewritten too.

One storyline that never made the cut saw Strange sending messages to Wanda through the commercials seen in the series. Head writer Jac Schaeffer said he was also set to eventually appear in one of them.

Feige went on to describe Marvel’s process as ‘a wonderful combination of very dedicated coordination, and chaos. Chaos magic.’

While Strange didn’t get the cameo many fans were hoping for, he did at least get a subtle mention in the WandaVision finale.

When Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) unveils the Darkhold, a book of magic known as the Book of Sin, and reads the chapter all about Scarlet Witch, she states that the Scarlet Witch was rumoured to have power that ‘exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme’.

In the 2016 Doctor Strange film, Stephen Strange is mentored by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), helping him to learn and become a master of the mystic arts.

Following the Ancient One’s death, it is understood that Doctor Strange will eventually take up the mantle as the Sorcerer Supreme, vowing to protect Earth against all threats while doing so.

The second Doctor Strange film is set for release in 2022 and is set to follow the sorcerer after the events of Avengers Endgame as he continues his research on the Time Stone.

However, everything changes when an old friend-turned-enemy returns to destroy every sorcerer on earth.

Consider us intrigued!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for release on March 23, 2022 and WandaVision is available to stream on Disney+.
