Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer: Most eye-opening moments, from Wanda’s new suit to evil Stephen

The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer has left Marvel fans absolutely mind blown, as Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) faces the consequences of dabbling with the multiverse.

The teaser came out shortly after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw the Sorcerer Supreme try to help Peter Parker (Tom Holland) tweak reality after his identity was blown – with disastrous consequences.

The Doctor Strange sequel will mark the return of several actors in the cast, including Rachel McAdams as Dr Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor Karl Mordo and of course, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, following her transformation into the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision.

The trailer has left MCU aficionados with lots to unravel, such as the fact that an evil Doctor Strange may be making a foreboding appearance.

Here’s our breakdown of the most eye-opening moments from the new, intriguing footage.

Is Stephen’s broken watch a bad omen?

One of the opening scenes of the new trailer features an incredibly ominous shot, as Doctor Strange’s reflection is seen in the fractured clock face of a watch.

In the first film, it’s revealed that one of Stephen’s watches features an inscription on the back from Christine, which reads: ‘Time will tell how much I love you, Christine.’

We dread to think how Stephen’s dabbling with time may have impacted his reality, including his relationship with Christine.

City’s deterioration looks familiar

Could this be mirroring what happened in What If…? (Picture: Marvel Studios)

Just a few months ago, Marvel series What If…? on Disney Plus explored a storyline where the world around Stephen deteriorated when he tried to bring Christine back from the dead.

It looks like something similar may be occurring in Multiverse of Madness, especially due to another glaring link between the film and the animated series…

Evil Doctor Strange has arrived

Just like in What If, the trailer for the Doctor Strange sequel reveals there are two Stephen Stranges at large, one of whom appears to be the evil version of the superhero.

While this could spell disaster for the former neurosurgeon, we’d be lying if we said we can’t wait to see how this plays out in live-action.

Wanda isn’t in trouble for Westview

When news of Wanda’s involvement in Multiverse of Madness first emerged, many fans immediately assumed that she would be going up against Doctor Strange, considering her power is supposed to supersede his, with her being the Scarlet Witch and he being the Sorcerer Supreme.

As the prophecy about Wanda goes, as stated in WandaVision: ‘The Scarlet Witch is not born; she is forged. She has no coven or need for incantation. Her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme.’

However, despite the fallout from her time in Westview, where she used an entire neighbourhood to create a false reality in WandaVision, Doctor Strange finds her not to admonish her, but to ask for her help.

Nonetheless, we have a feeling they might not end up remaining allies the entire film.

Wanda descending into darkness?

Wanda’s fingertips turning black is a sinister clue (Picture: Marvel Studios)

One sign of possible conflict between Wanda and Stephen is the fact that at one point in the trailer while she is tapping into her magic, the Scarlet Witch’s fingertips have blackened.

This draws parallels to Agatha Harkness’s (Kathryn Hahn) hands going black in WandaVision, when she was trying to control Wanda into handing over her power.

The WandaVision finale ended with an intriguing post-credits scene, where Wanda heard her sons Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) calling for her, possibly from another plane or dimension.

We have no doubt her mission to rescue her children is still on her mind, so that cause could result in her coming to blows with her fellow superhero.

On a side note – can we please appreciate Wanda’s spellbinding new suit? Who knew her WandaVision finale look could be topped!

Karl Mordo makes an ominous return

How far has Karl Mordo progressed with his mission? (Picture: Marvel Studios)

It’s been five years since we last saw Chiwetel as Karl Mordo, when he was introduced as a fellow Master of the Mystic Arts.

While he was initially a mentor to Stephen and an ally of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), in the end, it’s revealed that he has gone bad, stating that there are ‘too many sorcerers’ in the world.

In the trailer for the new film, he says: ‘I’m sorry Stephen. I hope you understand,’ teasing his continued mission to stamp out other sorcerers.

Is Christine’s wedding an alternate reality?

While fans are delighted to see Rachel return as Christine, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of her comeback.

If Multiverse of Madness takes a leaf out of What If’s book, then it may be that Stephen finds himself unable to prevent his death, no matter how many times he tries.

One scene in the teaser shows her walking down the aisle – although it appears from the angle that Doctor Strange may not be the groom on the other end.

So, could this be an alternate reality, or is it simply that Christine is tying the knot with someone who isn’t Stephen? Either way, we’re sensing heartbreak on the horizon.

Doctor Strange has his hands full with monsters

Welcome to the MCU Shuma-Gorath (Picture: Marvel Studios)

In the first Doctor Strange film, the sorcerer went up against the villainous entity Dormammu of the Dark Dimension.

Multiverse of Madness is set to introduce Shuma-Gorath to the MCU, an ancient being with a huge eye and tentacles, as seen in the trailer.

In addition to Shuma-Gorath, who is regarded as omnipotent in the comics, one shot of Stephen appears to show him blasting a tentacled creature using his own magic.

America Chavez makes her debut

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for the young hero (Picture: Marvel Studios)

Xochitl Gomez joins the cast of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as America Chavez, otherwise known as Miss America in the Marvel comics.

In the Marvel comics, America has the ability to cross through the multiverse, meaning she could end up being a huge asset to Stephen.

With some of her powers including superhuman strength and the ability to fly, Marvel.com explains that America hails from the ‘Utopian Parallel, a realm outside conventional time and space formed from the “unbinding of magic” by the multidimensional messiah Demiurge’.

Eventually, she joins the Young Avengers, meaning we could see her teaming up in future with the likes of Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson), Billy, Tommy and Ms Marvel (Iman Vellani)… if all our dreams came true, that is.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is due to be released in May 2022.
