Eddie Murphy is completely regal in new look at Coming 2 America as King Akeem returns

Eddie Murphy has promised the original cast of Coming to America have ‘brought their A-game’ for the sequel Coming 2 America, as fans have been given a first look at his character.

It’s been quite some time since the actor starred as Prince Akeem in the original film which follows the young royal’s attempt to find a bride – 32 years, in fact.

But it seems his character has had quite the glow up, becoming King and looking a whole lot more regal.

In the first look shot, Eddie dons a crown and red and gold robes as he sits on a leopard print lined golden throne. Not too shabby.

He clearly looks used to enjoying the high life, as he gives a sly smile and presses his fingers together thoughtfully.

Chatting about the process of making the movie, Eddie explained: ‘My favorite part of reuniting with the cast of Coming To America was making a movie that’s as good as the first one.

‘Getting everybody together, including Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, John Amos, James Earl Jones and the rest of my royal family, and making a really great movie, that’s my favorite part.’

He added: ‘What I’m most excited about the audience seeing is how amazing this movie is.

‘We have incredible new cast members like Wesley Snipes, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne and my own daughter, Bella Murphy, among others, who are all so funny and really brought their A-game. It’s just a great picture and I’m excited to have audiences see it.’

As for why it’s the right moment to return to Zamunda? ‘It’s been a while since we’ve had a great comedy that everybody can enjoy. Zamunda is a very funny place, and the world needs that right now.’

Can’t argue with that.

While the original film sees Akeem and his best friend Semmi (Arsenio) go to America to try and find the prince a bride, the second film, which sees director Craig Brewer return, catches up with them years later.

Akeem discovers he has a son he never knew about in America, named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler).

The king wants to honour his late father’s (James Earl Jones) wish to line up the New York native as the next crown prince, so the pair head to America once again.

What’s the worst that could happen, right?

Coming 2 America is set for release on Amazon Prime Video on March 5 2021.
