Eddie Murphy’s highly anticipated comedy sequel Coming 2 America will launch on Amazon Prime Video in 2021.
Amazon Studios has bagged the worldwide rights from Paramount Pictures, meaning the Craig Brewer directed film will be seen around the world in over 240 countries when it arrives on March 5, 2021.
Set in Zamunda, it sees newly-crowned King Akeem, played by Eddie, and his right hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on a new adventure as they return to Queens, New York, where it all began in the 1988 original movie.
Original stars James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, Cleo McDowell and Louise Anderson also star, and they will be joined by a host of newcomers including Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones and Teyana Taylor.
Coming To America, directed by John Landis, followed Prince Akeem in Queens as he tried to find a wife.
Eddie played four characters: Prince Akeem, Clarence, Randy Watson and Saul.
The move comes after the success of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
Amazon revealed it apparently drew in huge viewing figures, although when asked by Variety, a spokesperson refused to reveal the specific numbers.
They did, however, reveal that ‘tens of millions’ of viewers watched Borat 2 while stating that data provided by TV analytics company Samba TV, suggesting the movie’s estimated viewership in the US reached 1.6million households, was incorrect.
Going by Samba TV’s data, Borat’s 1.6million US households would have beaten the likes of Disney movie Mulan which was watched by 1.12million households on its release on Disney Plus.
This definitely bodes well for Eddie next year…
