Eddie Redmayne is shedding his traditional Englishman stereotype role and taking on a Michigan protestor in new movie The Trial of the Chicago 7, but it seems his American accent has got fans all conflicted.

The actor, 38, is set to star in the upcoming Netflix movie that lands next month and a new trailer shows Eddie in action as Michigan-born activist Tom Hayden.

The film follows the notorious trial of seven protestors, following demonstrations that took place in Chicago in 1968 at the Democratic National Convention that soon turned violent.

Protestors clashed with police officials and the National Guard, with five of the seven organisers of the protest, including Hayden and Abbie Hoffman (played by Sacha Baron Cohen) charged with conspiracy to incite a riot.

Netflix’s new teaser landed on Wednesday and begins with Fantastic Beasts star Eddie’s character sending out a warning about the planned protest.

Hoping for a revolution, the protestors tease they ‘may have to hurt some feelings’, as scenes then play out in the courtroom when a trial later ensues.

And, as fans reacted to the trailer on Twitter, Eddie’s accent took centre stage as many shared their thoughts on the British star’s US twang.

Some were all for it and loved Eddie’s efforts, with one user commenting: ‘Seeing Eddie Redmayne in his American accent got me like HOT DAYUMN!!!!’

Another shared a GIF of Michelle Obama to show their appreciation of his accent, where the former First Lady says: ‘Hey Queen, you have done it again. Constantly raising the bar for us all and doing it flawlessly.’

Others, though, weren’t so convinced, with one user calling it ‘jarring’ and another joking the shock of hearing Eddie as an American gave them ‘whiplash’.

‘Eddie Redmayne with an American accent, PLEASE,’ tweeted one user, while another posted that they’d ‘lost it’ after hearing the star in action.

Eddie wasn’t the only cast member from the movie hoping to perfect their character’s accent, as Borat star Sacha admitted he was ‘terrified’ of not doing it justice.

Speaking at a Q&A during a recent screening of The Trial of the Chicago 7, Cohen said he found it difficult to take on Hoffman’s Massachusetts accent, as Hoffman had spent time in Berkeley at the University of California too, altering his voice,

Despite the director advising him his portrayal of Hoffman was an ‘interpretation and not an impersonation’, Business Insider reports Sacha said of mimicking the accent: ‘I was terrified to sound wrong.’

The movie boasts a stellar cast with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella and John Carroll Lynch joining Sasha and Eddie on screen.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and was due to be released in theatres, but due to coronavirus it will now premiere on Netflix – after the streaming platform bought the rights to the film.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 hits Netflix on October 16.
