Everything you need to know about Mean Girls Day

Today is a special day for Tiny Fey and Lindsay Lohan fans: it’s Mean Girls Day!

Mean Girls Day celebrates SNL alum Tina’s tongue-in-cheek twist on the American high school movie.

Homeschooled outsider Cady Heron (Lohan) gets in deep trying to come to terms with teenage drama, ruthless cliques and the worst clique of all: the Plastics, Regina (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) and Karen (Amanda Seyfried).

Tragically, Mean Girls Day is not formally recognised as an international holiday (why?!). You certainly won’t get the day off to go shopping – but it is the perfect excuse to pop on the colour pink.

So, when is it, what happens on it and how should you celebrate?

Here’s what you need to know.

When is Mean Girls Day?

Mean Girls Day always takes place on October 3. In 2021, it’s on a Sunday.

The date October 3 has a special meaning to film fans, ever since it was released in 2004.

In the movie, heartthrob character Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) absent-mindedly asks Cady, who is harbouring an all-consuming crush on him, what day it is while they’re in math class.

In a comedic voiceover, describing her infatuation, Cady says: ‘On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.’

The movie then cuts to the fated moment. Aaron blandly asks the question, and Cady tells him: ‘It’s October 3rd’.

Thus Mean Girls Day was born.

Movie fans have begun celebrating Mean Girls Day annually by watching the film, wearing pink, and throwing events to mark the occasion.

Though there’ll likely be fewer this year, due to the pandemic, past years have seen a number of London events taking place on October 3 devoted to the movie.

Events have included a ‘So Fetch’ themed afternoon tea at Duo London, a cabaret in Walthamstow, and a quiz based on the movie at the Cock Tavern in Fulham.

This year, you might see the odd Mean Girls-inspired bottomless brunch pop up.

Previous years have also seen UK cinemas – which have now started to reopen post-lockdown – host special screenings of the movie.
