Here’s Where You’ve Seen The Cast Of Midnight Sky Before

This year marked the first time in nine years that humans had been sent to the International Space Station from America, so it’s fitting that 2020 was also filled with all kinds of space movies and TV shows. The latest is Netflix’s film The Midnight Sky, with a cast led by George Clooney. If you just saw the movie without that information, you might not have even recognised the A-list actor behind that giant grey beard.

In the movie, Clooney plays a post-apocalyptic scientist named Augustine who stays behind in the Arctic to try to warn an incoming spacecraft that the earth is not inhabitable in the same way it used to be. The actor also directed the film, which now has a home on Netflix alongside the streaming site’s other 2020 space-themed additions Space Force, Challenger: The Final Flight, and Away.

But we’re not exactly claiming that space content is so 2020. It’s a genre that’s been around for years. In fact, most of The Midnight Sky‘s cast came to this project already having starred in one or more space-themed projects. Nearly every person in this crew was extra prepared to take the galaxy on again in The Midnight Sky.

George Clooney Plays Augustine

Looking almost unrecognisable in a big, grizzly beard, Clooney portrays a scientist living in the Arctic. He’s desperate to make contact with an incoming spaceship to warn the crew that Earth isn’t the same place they once left behind.

Felicity Jones Plays Sully

Sully is the lead astronaut aboard the spaceship Aether. She’s also pregnant, which makes her return to earth that much more important and potentially dangerous.

Jones’ Previous Trips to Space: Most notably, she played Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But she also played a space discoverer in The Aeronauts, only instead of a spaceship, her character explored in a hot air balloon.Photo: Courtesy of Netflix.

Caoilinn Springall Plays Iris

Iris is an eight-year-old stowaway in the Arctic who didn’t get out when everyone else evacuated. Soon, she forges a bond with Augustine.

This is the young actress’ first ever role, and she joked to Variety that her potential star power hasn’t quite hit her or her family yet. “It felt a bit weird,” she told the outlet of seeing herself in the movie. “My sister saw it, and she said, ‘Caoilinn, look at your big head.'”Photo: Courtesy of Netflix.

David Oyelowo Plays Commander Gordon Adewole

Originally, the spaceship’s commander was going to be named Commander Harper, according to Business Insider. Oyelowo told the outlet that Clooney, who directed the film, encouraged the actors to bring their own backgrounds to the characters. “So I changed that character’s name from Commander Harper to Commander Gordon Adewole, which is a Nigerian name,” Oyelowo said. “I hadn’t seen an African astronaut before let alone someone who is tasked with saving all of humanity.”

Oyelowo’s Previous Trips to Space: The actor is probably best known for playing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, which has nothing to do with space. But he also appeared in the space movie Interstellar as the school principal and has voiced characters in A Wrinkle in Time and Star Wars Rebels.Photo: Courtesy of Netflix.

Kyle Chandler Plays Tom Mitchell

Even as a longtime astronaut, being aboard the Aether for so long starts to get to Tom.

Chandler’s Previous Trips to Space: Sure, he’s best known for Friday Night Lights, but Chandler has also been in several space-focused movies, including First Man, Super 8, and The Day the Earth Stood Still.Photo: Courtesy of Netflix.

Demián Bichir Plays Sanchez

Sanchez is another crew member aboard the spacecraft, and while his character doesn’t always have the best time aboard the ship –the actor sure did. “A George Clooney set is a very happy place to be,” Bichir said when speaking about his role to KSDK News.

Tiffany Boone Plays Maya

Maya is a flight engineer on the spacecraft. She’s tasked with keeping things in working condition even as the flight path is littered with obstacles.

Before The Midnight Sky, Boone hadn’t done any other acting in space. But she is known for playing young Mia in Little Fires Everywhere and Jerrika in The Chi.Photo: Courtesy of Netflix.

Ethan Peck Plays Younger Augustine

For flashback scenes, Peck took on the role of the younger version of George Clooney’s character.

Peck’s Previous Trips to Space: Notably, he plays Spock in the Star Trek: Discovery TV series. As Spock, he’s usually clean-shaven, but in The Midnight Sky he had to sport the early stages of Augustine’s wild beard.

Sophie Rundle Plays Jean

Jean, a fellow scientist, becomes involved with Augustine when he’s younger and starting out in his field. She appears via flashback scenes.

This is Rundle’s first role in a space-themed project, but she’s well known for her British television work in projects like Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster, Peaky Blinders, Dickensian, and more.
