James McAvoy’s next role will see him have to cope without learning any lines as he’s going into filming without a script.
The original movie’s director, Christian Carion, is returning for the English-language version from STXfilms, which will see the Atonement actor partially improvise his role.
It will follow a man returning to his ex-wife after his son suddenly disappears, which sets him on a path towards extreme ends in the hunt to return his child.
James, 41, will play the father in the film, while The Crown star Claire will take on the role of the ex-wife.
In a unique twist, The Hollywood Reporter states that he will not be given a script before shooting, and will have no dialogue to get him ready for the part.
He will instead be improvising scenes on set as the mystery unfolds in front of him, giving the performance an authentic quality.
This improvisational approach mirrors the original, in which The Beach actor Guillaume Canet took on the lead role.
Chairman of the STXfilms Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogelson, said: ‘We’re thrilled to be working with Christian to create My Son for worldwide audiences.
‘James will be doing the detective work of the film in real-time, on camera, to create real tension for this thriller. We like to support bold and innovative storytelling like My Son, and Claire could not be a more spectacular or exciting choice for this film which is certain to thrill audiences.’
STXfilms attained the rights to distribute the film in North America, the UK, Italy, Latin America, Spain, Australia and China.
Production is set to begin soon in Scotland, with an early November start expected, however no release window has yet been declared.
