Julia Roberts’ Hollywood career began with the 1998 film Mystic Pizza – but it could have all been so different.
Gloria Estefan has revealed she was offered the role of Daisy Araújo in the romantic comedy-drama, but turned it down – leading to a then-unknown Julia taking the part.
The Conga singer remotely appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and a fan asked if there were any songs that she passed on that went on to be hits for somebody else.
Gloria, 63, said: ‘Not a song because I usually write most of my songs and I recorded most of them, but I will tell you a movie role I passed on – Mystic Pizza.’
Andy’s jaw dropped as the singer continued: ‘I had that role. I didn’t even have to audition for it, but at the time I felt like I was not a good enough actor and I wanted to cement my career in music.
‘I thought, one day I will do acting but I’m not going to throw myself into this and not be good at it. So it then went to Julia Roberts, and she even had my long curly hair.’
Andy said: ‘No biggie, the movie that made Julia Roberts a superstar!’, but there’s no sour grapes here.
Grammy Award-winner Gloria said: ‘As well it should have. That was awesome. I would not have been ready.’
Julia went on to take the role as the teen girl working in a Connecticut pizza parlour – with Matt Damon also getting his first movie role in the film.
Mystic Pizza was a critical success and over the next two years, Julia bagged roles in two little films called Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman – you may have heard of them.
Now 52, Julia has won an Oscar for best actress in Erin Brockovich and is one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, with her movies bringing in nearly $3 billion (£2.3bn) at the box office.
And Gloria hasn’t done so bad either; she has won three Grammys and was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honour, Presidential Medal of Freedom and was named as one of the Kennedy Center Honours in 2018.
So it all worked out pretty well.
The Cuban-American star did eventually try her hand at acting, appearing in the 199 film Music Of The Heart and 2000’s For Love Or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.
She also starred as the mother of Naya Rivera’s character Santana Lopez in Glee.
