Kirsten Dunst ‘to return as MJ for Spider-Man 3’ as stars across series join epic multiverse sequel

Spider-Man 3 is shaping up to be the greatest hits of Peter Parker, and it has got fans hyped.

It was reported last night that Alfred Molina will return to star in Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film as Spider-Man 2 villain Doctor Octopus/ Otto Octavius.

But if rumours are to believed, he won’t be the only familiar face that Holland’s Peter Parker will be running into in the MCU, as it will be a true multiverse experience.

According to Collider, Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary Jane Watson to the Spider-Man universe, 13 years after last playing Peter Parker’s love interest in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.

The 38-year-old played MJ in the Sam Raimi trilogy opposite Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, and Collider reports that Maguire, 45, will also be returning to the Marvel film if a deal can be struck.

He won’t be the only Spidey returning, though, as Andrew Garfield, who played the superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man series, has also reportedly joined the cast.

The website claims that Emma Stone – who played Gwen Stacy opposite Garfield – will also join the MCU film.

Earlier this year, it was also reported that Jamie Foxx was in final talks to return as the classic Spidey villain Electro, after playing him in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The return of Spider-Man stars from over the past few decades is a real coup for the upcoming untitled Spider-Man sequel, which almost wasn’t going to happen.

Last year, Spider-Man was dumped from the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Sony and Disney were unable to come to an agreement on financing.

However, Holland, 24, managed to get Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony chairman Tom Rothman to reconcile, apparently using his starring role in Sony’s Uncharted as leverage.

Iger previously said that the third Spider-Man would be a ‘Peter Parker story that has never been done before on film’, which gives weight to the multiverse reports; the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse played with the concept, but not in live action.

So too does the addition of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to the cast, with his upcoming standalone film being called the Multiverse of Madness – so we know he’s into that sort of thing.

The mid-credits scene of Far From Home (spoilers ahead) saw J Jonah Jameson of the Daily Bugle revealing Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world, so the new film will follow Peter as an unmasked superhero.

Zendaya will return as MJ – although her character, Michelle, is not a direct adaptation of the MJ, aka Mary Jane, played by Dunst – while Jacob Batalon (Ned), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson) and Marisa Tomei  (Aunt May) are all set to return too.

Holland confirmed that the superhero sequel is currently shooting in Atlanta.

Spider-Man 3 is set for release on December 17, 2021.
