Maisie Williams says The New Mutants delays meant ‘free promotion for three years’ before clapping back at scathing review

Maisie Williams has likened headline-generating delays to her latest movie The New Mutants to ‘free promotion’.

Well, she’s not wrong.

The Game of Thrones actress stars in the horror-superhero film, released yesterday in the UK, alongside the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy and Blu Hunt.

It was originally to be released in April 2018, but had to be re-shot – leading many to wonder about its quality.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter prior to the film’s release but published yesterday, the star discussed the pushbacks and subsequent speculation, saying: ‘ I feel like anyone speaking about any movie in any capacity is a good thing, especially one which hasn’t come out yet.’

She added: ‘There’s so much mystery as to why this film was shelved for so long, and really, I think it was a lot simpler than any of us really had thought.

‘But the drama and the excitement of, like, “It was supposed to be re-shot and it’s supposed to be terrible,” I think that just draws people’s interest.’

‘I mean, that’s just free promotion for three years. There are people who wish that they had people talking about their films!’

Nevertheless, the movie has been met with weak reviews from critics.

In fact, 23-year-old Maisie has clapped back at one particularly scathing Forbes review (which called it ‘the worst X-Men movie ever’ – ouch) by sharing it along with the caption: ‘Sounds like a must see! Get your tickets now!’

Her tweet generated almost 12,000 retweets and over 85,000 likes meaning, once again, lots more free promotion…
