Normal People star Paul Mescal landed a role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter.

The Emmy-nominated actor will be starring in his first feature role alongside Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson.

The Lost Daughter will see Olivia play an elegant university professor who becomes engrossed in the lives of a woman and her young daughter as she watches them on the beach.

She begins to unravel as she thinks back at the choices she made as a young mum.

Other stars joining the project include Peter Sarsgaard and Jessie Buckley.

Paul, 24, rose to fame after playing Connell in the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel of the same name.

His credits include TV drama The Deceived and many stage plays, including The Great Gatsby and The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

The Lost Daughter will be written and directed by Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal, who will also serve as a producer with Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren through their Pie Films banner.

Samuel Marshall Productions’ Charlie Dorfman will also produce the film and finance it alongside Endeavor Content.

The Lost Daughter is originally a novel written by Elena Ferrante and explores the conflicting emotions between a mother’s relationship towards her children.

We’re going to have to get our daily dose of Paul from his appearance in The Rolling Stones’ music video while we wait for the film.

The legendary rock band enlisted the Irish actor to take the lead in the visuals for their single Scarlet, which was originally recorded 46 years ago.

Paul dancing around the house while drinking whiskey is the mood until we get to watch his first feature film.
