Oscars 2021: Daniel Kaluuya, Leslie Odom Jr and Viola Davis lead diverse nominations

The Oscars 2021 has proved to be one of the Academy Awards’ most diverse yet with Daniel Kaluuya, Viola Davis, Lakeith Stanfield and Leslie Odom Jr among those to receive top nods.

Married couple Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas did the honours of announcing this year’s nominations live from London on Monday afternoon.

Kaluuya has received a nod for his critically-acclaimed role as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. He has already won a Golden Globe and scored Bafta and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his performance as the real life Black Panther leader.

It’s his second Oscar nomination ever after receiving a best actor nod for Get Out in 2018.

The British actor will be up against his Judas and the Black Messiah co-star Stanfield, who is nominated for his turn as FBI informant William ‘Bill’ O’Neal.

Hamilton star Odom Jr is also competing in the category for his role as late singer Sam Cooke in One Night In Miami.

Chadwick Boseman has earned a posthumous best actor nomination for his stunning performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, while Viola Davis has been recognised in the best actress category for her lead role in the drama.

Andra Day will be going up against Davis for best actress as she’s been recognised for work in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Incredibly, The Walking Dead actor Steven Yeun has become the first Asian-American actor to be nominated in the best actor category for his performance in Minari.

The Oscars will take place in multiple locations, including its usual home at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The 93rd Academy Awards is due to take place on April 25, 2021.
