Prince William is set to make a virtual speech at this year’s Baftas to celebrate the film industry amid the pandemic.

The Duke of Cambridge, who has been President of Bafta since 2010, will appear on both nights of the awards to celebrate the resilience of the film industry over the last year.

He will also host a virtual conversation with three-time Bafta award-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup and hair designer Sharon Martin on filming in lockdown and the craft of filmmaking.

The Baftas are taking place over two nights, starting on April 10, with a fully virtual audience.

The Saturday night will see a performance from supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr, while Celeste will perform on Sunday night with her song Hear My Voice from best film nominee The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Leslie will also perform again, this time with Corinne Bailey Rae as the pair will perform Change is Gonna Come, featured in the film One Night in Miami.

Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary have been promoted to hosts of the main show from their usual red carpet gig.

Clara Amfo will host the Bafta Film Awards Opening Night on Saturday, April 10, live on BBC Two, when eight winners will be unveiled.

The Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award will be the only in-person awards moment on the first night, which will be filmed live at the Royal Albert Hall, and viewers will also see a showcase of the nominated films.

Noel Clarke will be honoured for outstanding British contribution to cinema over 10 years after his Rising Star win.

Speaking of the honour, Noel commented: ‘Thank you Bafta for this acknowledgment and recognition of my work over the past two decades. I will endeavour to continue to make ground-breaking work and open doors

for underrepresented people that may not often get a chance.’

The Baftas are part of a drastically different awards season calendar, with many shows postponed and being held remotely amid the ongoing pandemic.

The Father, The Mauritanian, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will battle to be named best film, while Calm With Horses, The Dig, The Father, His House, Limbo, Mogul Mowgli, Promising Young Woman, Rocks and Saint Maud are up for outstanding British film.
