Rege-Jean Page speaks out on James Bond rumours after devastating Bridgerton exit as he jets back to the UK

Rege-Jean Page announced he was leaving Bridgerton about five minutes ago but he’s already been forced to address those persistent James Bond rumours.

The British actor, who was spotted arriving back in the UK this week, is hotly-tipped to replace Daniel Craig as the next Bond following the news that he will not be reprising his role as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, in Bridgerton season two.

However, Rege is of course keeping his cards fairly close to his chest but at least admitted that he’s loving being envisioned as the next 007.

Speaking to The Mirror, the actor said of the mounting rumours: ‘Ah, the “B” word.

‘I think that if you are British, and you do anything of note that other people take notice of, then people will start talking about that.

‘I think that’s fairly normal, and I’m flattered to be in the category of Brits that people have noticed.’

He added: ‘Nothing more – or less – than that.’

Rege then laughed at the idea of making such big decisions during the coronavirus pandemic, stating coyly: ‘I think the concept of having plans in this moment in history is mildly hilarious. So I’ve given up on making them.’

It echoes Rege’s previous comments about the rumours in January when he told Jimmy Fallon: ‘I think the internet thinks a lot of things, and that’s one of the more pleasant ones.

‘I think there might be an element of cultural translation to be done here. Like if you’re a Brit, and you do something of any kind of renown that people regard well, then people start saying the “B” word.’

That’s one way to avoid talking to people (Picture:

He added: ‘I’m very, very glad to have the badge. I’m glad to be in such wonderful company of people who have the badge. But it’s a badge.’

Earlier this week, bookmakers Coral revealed that Rege now has odds of 5-2 to replace Craig.

Bridgerton fans were heartbroken last week when Netflix announced that Rege will not be returning for season two.

The news was announced with a message from the elusive character Lady Whistledown, which read: ‘Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings.

‘We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.

‘Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.’

Rege then shared a sweet message, writing: ‘Pleasure and a privilege! An honour to be a member of the family – on and off screen, cast, crew and incredible fans – the love is real and will just keep growing.’

The 31-year-old was spotted keeping a low profile as he arrived at Heathrow Airport in London on Tuesday.

Keeping it casual, Rege wore a black tracksuit with a cap pulled low over his head and checked his phone while making his way out of arrivals.
