Star Wars fans conflicted as Rian Johnson reveals scrapped Anakin Skywalker scene in The Last Jedi

Star Wars director Rian Johnson has revealed he decided to scrap a pivotal scene involving Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi but fans are conflicted about it.

During a Twitter Q&A yesterday, the filmmaker responded to a fan who wondered if he ever considered having Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost meet with his son Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) or Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the 2017 episode.

In the blockbuster franchise, Anakin becomes Darth Vader and Luke’s master was Yoda.

Rian explained: ‘Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed.

‘Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment.’

The revelation earned a mixed reaction from Rian’s followers with some agreeing with his ultimate decision but others preferring the Anakin outcome.

‘It would have made far more sense for Vader in any incarnation (Vader or anakin ) to appear to talk to Luke. Luke brought him from the dark side – furthermore Vader is Kylos grandfather so his opinion of how to help Rey against his bloodline would have mattered,’ one Star Wars fan explained.

Siding with Rian, another weighed in: ‘I didn’t like The last Jedi one bit but he’s right. Luke didn’t interact Anakin before he became Vader. So this is accurate.’

Playing devil’s advocate, one said: ‘I love this scene so much and support your choice. On the flip side, Anakin does have some relevant experience with failure.’

However one Star Wars fan countered: ‘Luke was addressing Anakin the whole time. He was psychologically breaking him down, using love and compassion – the good in Vader is Anakin.’

Another challenged Rian’s conclusion and said: ‘I agree with some of that.. but.. Return of The Jedi saw Luke reach through Vader & pull Anakin back. He literally sacrificed his life for Luke in the end.. how is that not a relationship with Anakin, bruh?’

The Last Jedi, which also starred Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher, focused on Rey (Ridley) develop her new abilities under the guidance of Luke (Hamill), while the Resistance prepared to battle with the First Order.

The current Star Wars series came to an end last year with The Rise of Skywalker, which saw Ridley and John Boyega bow out after leading the new trilogy.
