Tenet didn’t let the coronavirus pandemic hold it back as it raked in $50 million (£37.5m) over its opening weekend.

Movie fans are slowly returning to cinemas and Christopher Nolan blockbuster Tenet – which stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson – is a great way to move past lockdown.

In the UK specifically, Tenet took in $7.1 million (£5.4m) as the first Hollywood film to be released in cinemas since lockdown began in March.

It is the biggest box office take for a film in the UK in seven months, since Sam Mendes’s 1917 in January.

‘We are off to a fantastic start internationally and couldn’t be more pleased,’ explained Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros.

‘Given the unprecedented circumstances of this global release, we know we are running a marathon, not a sprint, and look forward to long playability for this film globally for many weeks to come.’

The secretive espionage blockbuster deals with time but is not about time travel as we know it, with the story following the Protagonist (Washington) who finds himself on a mission to help prevent a situation that would be ‘worse than a nuclear holocaust’.

Tenet was meant to be released on July 17, but was then moved to July 31 and then, finally, pushed back to August 12.

Given the great reviews, hopes are high that it will do well when it launches in major markets including the US and China.

Even Tom Cruise was excited to see the spy movie, as he surprised fans in London by attending a screening.

The 58-year-old actor shared a rare video on social media of his first trip to the cinema since lockdown began.

In the 30-second clip, Tom was seen sitting in the back of a London taxi on a rainy afternoon and drove past tourist attractions such as Buckingham Palace.

Eventually, he pulled up to the cinema but not before posing next to a Tenet poster outside and exclaimed with relief: ‘Back to the movies.’

The Top Gun star then gave a cheeky wave to the camera while sitting comfortably in his seat in the middle of the packed screening.
