This week’s most watched movie on Netflix, despite negative reviews and criticism from reviewers, has amassed a staggering 28 million views in its first three days of availability.
Atlas, the next action-sci-fi film starring Jennifer Lopez, has had a terrible reception from critics, with a meagre and (very) rotten 19% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The $100 million (£78.6 million) film follows the shrewd data analyst Atlas Shepherd (Lopez) on her quest to put an end to a robot that has gone rogue.
When the mission takes a deadly turn, she is forced to trust the artificial intelligence gadget despite her fundamental mistrust of AI.
Mark Strong from Shazam!, Simu Liu from Marvel, Oscar nominee Sterling K. Brown, and Sherlock Homes are also featured in Atlas.
After less than a week on the platform, Atlas has garnered 28,200,000 views worldwide, according to Netflix’s website Tudum. The movie has dominated this week’s global top 10.
That is also well ahead of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, which managed 21,400,000 in the same time frame in April.
This is based on 56,300,000 hours spent watching the film, which has a two-hour length.
And, as always, Netflix bases its figures on each account representing two people, thus it could be argued from their perspective that Atlas has already been watched by a staggering 56 million people.
Netflix acquired data between May 20 and May 26, and Atlas was only disclosed on Friday, May 24.
Atlas also outperformed other pictures currently streaming on the platform, with animated film Thelma the Unicorn in distant second position with 10.7 million views.
Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs came in third place this week with 9.5 million views, while a former number one ranked fourth.
New Netflix film Mother of the Bride, starring Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove, and Benjamin Bratt, was likewise slammed upon its debut, with some viewers even alleging that it had ‘an AI script.
However, it still received 9.3 million views this week, outperforming Madame Web, Disturbia, Sing 2, and A Simpe Favour.
Although J-Lo might be pulling in interest from fans for this flick, directed by Brad Peyton, was dubbed ‘a massive misfire in almost every conceivable fashion’ by Allen Almachar for The MacGuffin, while The San Francisco Chronicle’s Mick LaSalle wrote: ‘Imagine two hours of Lopez trying to deadlift 1,000 pounds, and you’d have an idea of what Atlas is like.’
Deadline’s Valerie Complex also called it ‘a missed opportunity’ while Empire’s Helen O’Hara observed: ‘Even major movie-star charisma can’t make up for the recycled story elements, tired exposition and endless psycho-babble.’
Fans have also been left less than impressed, with viewer @thisisseaston simply tweeting: ‘This new J Lo movie is really bad. Not even fun to watch bad. Bad bad.’
‘All those amazing cancelled shows. For this,’ @sin_shady718 added.
Atlas is streaming on Netflix now.
