The Original 1995 Babysitters Club Then & Now

Netflix just rebooted The Baby-Sitters Club as a TV show, but with a modern twist. Instead of the characters being from the late ’80s and ’90s like they were when the novels were published, the Netflix series has made them Gen Z-ers who don’t even know what a landline phone is! Who else feels so old right now? Get ready to feel even older, because one look at where the cast of the original Baby-Sitters Club movie is now will remind everyone just how much time has passed since the film came out in 1995.

The movie starred a bunch of up-and-comers, many of whom used the BSC movie to break into the acting business. It’s now been 25 years since that movie came out, and the actors have left their 13 and 11-year-old characters behind to forge new lives for themselves.

Some of the actors stuck around in show business in varying levels of success, but a couple quit the industry, and two of them even went on to become musicians. Maybe the Netflix series will be the career boost for these new actors as it was for the original movie cast. And then in 25 years we’ll be discussing where the Gen Z actors are now. But to see where the OG cast is today, keep reading.

Then: Schuyler Fisk As Kristy Thomas

Kristy, president of the baby-sitters club, was played by Schuyler Fisk in her breakout acting role. But Fisk knew show business well as her mother is actor Sissy Spacek, who played Carrie in the eponymous 1976 film among other big roles in Bloodline, The Help, and more.Photo: Columbia Pictures/Photofest.

Now: Schuyler Fisk In 2020

Fisk kept up her acting career and has had roles on shows like Castle Rock, Fear The Walking Dead, and more. But in the early 2000s, Fisk also started a music career. Her work has been featured in movies like Safe Haven and Dear John and on TV shows like Ugly Betty and One Tree Hill. According to her website, she’s currently working on a new album.Photo: Jason Davis/FilmMagic.

Then: Rachael Leigh Cook As Mary Anne Spier

Kristy’s shy best friend Mary-Anne helps host a day camp for the neighbourhood kids in the BSC movie. It was Rachael Leigh Cook’s very first acting role, and it helped make 1995 a big year for her. She also had a part in the Jonathan Taylor Thomas movie Tom and Huck that year.Photo: Columbia Pictures/Photofest.

Now: Rachael Leigh Cook In 2020

Cook is now one of Hallmark’s most prominent TV movie stars. In the past few years, she’s starred in A Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas, Valentine in the Vineyard, and Frozen in Love. She notably also voices Jaesa Willsaam in the Star Wars video games and played Shawn’s girlfriend Abigail on Psych.Photo: Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images.

Then & Now: Tricia Joe As Claudia Kishi

Integral to the baby-sitters club operation is that they can use Claudia’s room and her private phone line to conduct business. Trice Joe got to play this very important role in the movie. And while for most of the actors, the BSC film was one of their first, it was actually Joe’s last.

After filming the movie, Joe quit acting and returned to regular life. Her Facebook page shows that she went on to study dance and criminal justice. Claudia always loved Nancy Drew mysteries, so she’d be proud.Photo: Sam Emerson/Columbia/Kobal/Shutterstock.

Then: Bre Blair As Stacey McGill

Claudia’s best friend Stacey always thought she was so sophisticated for a 13-year-old, but Blair was actually a couple of years older at 15 when she played the part. The Baby-Sitters Club was her first major role, and it kicked off a lengthy career in TV and film.Photo: Sam Emerson/Columbia/Kobal/Shutterstock.

Now: Bre Blair In 2020

Blair most recently played Annie Kay on S.W.A.T for two years and she’s also been on Station 19, The Flash, 90210, and more. Although she has done some movies, her work is mostly in television. She’s had everything from small, one episode roles to series regular roles over her career.Photo: Gary Gershoff/WireImage.

Then: Larisa Oleynik As Dawn Schafer

Dawn is Mary-Anne’s stepsister, newly living in Connecticut after growing up in California. In the books, her style was always described as “California casual” as if that really meant anything. In the movie it meant that she dressed in long skirts and denim vests and often braided her hair.Photo: Columbia Pictures/Photofest.

Now: Larisa Oleynik In 2020

Oleynik has gone on to have a really successful acting career since doing The Baby-Sitters Club movie. She played the titular role on The Secret World of Alex Mack, Alissa on 3rd Rock From The Sun, Ezra’s ex Maggie on Pretty Little Liars, and Cynthia on Mad Men. She was also famously in love with her Prada backpack in the teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You. Photo: Tibrina Hobson/Getty Images.

Then: Stacy Ramsower As Mallory Pike

Mallory is one of two junior members of the BSC, since she’s only 11. (Still can’t imagine letting kids be supervised by an 11-year-old, but these books were written in the ’80s. It was a different time.) The Baby-Sitters Club wasn’t Ramsower’s first role. Prior to the film, she had done four episodes of the Nickelodeon show Hey Dude.Photo: Columbia Pictures/Photofest.

Now: Stacy Ramsower In 2020

Ramsower left acting in 1996 after appearing in the TV horror movie Terminal. She’s now a doula who’s also training to be a social worker, per her Instagram. She also has a podcast called Sacred Body about finding deeper fulfillment in things like “birth, sex, food, self-expression and spirituality.”

Then: Zelda Harris As Jessi Ramsey

Jessi is an aspiring ballerina, Mallory’s best friend, and the other junior club member for the BSC. Usually actors are older than their characters, but Harris was just 10 when she played 11-year-old Jessi. She had her breakout role before The Baby-Sitters Club, playing Troy in Spike Lee’s 1994 film Crooklyn.Photo: Columbia Pictures/Photofest.

Now: Zelda Harris In 2020

Harris has acted a little bit over the years, with 10 roles since the BSC movie. Her most recent was as Anna in a 2014 episode of the TV show All About Family. But these days she’s more focused on singing in her band, Zelda and the Lo Los.
