The first official look at Marvel’s upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder is finally here after the studio provided us with a belated Easter treat of a teaser trailer featuring glimpses of Zeus and Jane Foster as Thor on bank holiday Monday.
Following multiple delays, we’re finally set to be blessed with the fourth standalone Thor film in the series this July, just over a year after shooting wrapped.
With director Taika Waititi back at the helm following the success of the irreverent Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, Love and Thunder seems to be promising the same level of groovy.
Powered largely by the iconic strains of Guns N’ Roses Sweet Child O’Mine, the trailer shows the God of Thunder in a self-reflective mood as he tries to figure out his way back from the out-of-shape couch potato last seen in Avengers: Endgame.
‘These hands were once used for battle,’ Chris Hemsworth as Thor narrates. ‘Now they’re but humble tools for peace. I need to figure out exactly who I am.
‘I want to choose my own path, live in the moment.’
Unveiling a fitness montage and return to his prime physique – alongside a new ‘Rock Thor’ outfit of band T-shirt and cut-off jacket – there’s travelling, smooching and plenty of old-school Thor in his traditional full regalia, despite his insistence that his ‘superhero days are over’.
There’s also confirmation of the return of Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his crew – which yes, includes Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) – as they help Thor on his journey.
Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is also glimpsed suited up in New Asgard as she seemingly struggles with leadership, while we’re given a quick peep at what appears to be Russell Crowe in his role as Zeus, summoning a thunderbolt and resplendent in gold armour.
Most excitingly, a proper look is finally shown of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as the female version of the god of thunder, The Mighty Thor.
Wielding a reforged version of Thor’s hammer Mjölnir, the superhero looks epic in a winged helmet, red cloak and armour, much to Thor’s surprise.
Thompson previously termed her character’s powers ‘erotic’ as she discussed Valkyrie ahead of her return in the new movie, not long after a leaked on set photo of what appeared to be her new black and white costume surfaced.
Also joining the cast is Christian Bale as villain Gorr the God Butcher, but it looks like we’ll have to sit tight a little longer before we get a proper look at his character.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release in cinemas on July 8.
