Tom Cruise’s space movie isn’t just a pipe dream as a confirmed date has revealed exactly when the actor and crew will be jetting to outer space.

The Mission: Impossible star will be making his way to the International Space Station with the help of Nasa and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Now, Space Shuttle Almanac announced the ‘tourist mission’ is set to take place in October 2021.

‘So its confirmed that @CommanderMLA is flying the @Axiom_Space @SpaceX #CrewDragon tourist mission with Director @DougLiman & Tom Cruise. One seat still to be filled. They are to launch in October, 2021,’ they tweeted.

Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has signed up to helm the project and he’s currently writing the script, although details of the plot are unknown.

The film remains untitled and Universal has reportedly given the green light for a $200 million (£156 million) budget.

So that’s all it costs to go to space? Too easy.

According to Deadline, Tom, Doug and writers Christopher McQuarrie and PJ van Sandwijk pitched the one-of-a-kind project to Universal in a ‘exuberant Zoom call’.

Nasa confirmed their involvement in May after rumours began floating.

Announcing the news, Nasa’s administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted at the time: ‘NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station! We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.’

SpaceX boss Elon added: ‘Should be a lot of fun!’

It will be the first narrative movie to be shot in outer space and actor Simon Pegg says he’s pretty keen to get involved.

‘I’d love to go into space, it would be amazing! But you know, you have to also think about your family and safety and stuff, he told NME.

‘Tom never does anything recklessly and all of his stunts are meticulously designed, rehearsed and trained for. If he does it, it will be really safe. So, I don’t know, you never know.’

Tom, 58, is famous for doing his own stunts and was pictured in the throes of a stomach-churning scene while shooting Mission: Impossible 7 in the UK.

Although the action hero did push the boundaries perhaps a little too far in 2017 when he broke his foot while filming a scene jumping from one rooftop to another for Mission: Impossible – Fallout in London.

Tom will next appear in the anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which is set for release in December.
