When a film is released on Netflix, it always receives a comeback, and this Tom Holland picture has caused quite a stir among fans.
Uncharted is based on the video game franchise of the same name and also stars Mark Wahlberg.
The action-adventure picture, directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, was initially released last year to lukewarm reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it presently has a rating of 2 out of 5 stars.
‘Street-smart treasure hunter Nathan Drake (Tom) and his renegade tutor Sully (Mark) set off on a risky expedition around the world to discover Magellan’s lost wealth,’ according to the film’s synopsis on Netflix.
Added to Netflix over the weekend (November 26), fans are debating this new addition to the lineup, with some more convinced than others.
‘Uncharted is now on Netflix if you wanna see a fun treasure hunt adventure that’s absolutely nothing like Uncharted,’ wrote one person, who is clearly more of a fan of the 2007 video game, which has seen a number of iterations since its first release.
Others also weren’t convinced, as one said: ‘Uncharted is on Netflix but its still a bad movie and that makes me so sad.’ Ouch.
Others, however, were slightly more forgiving, with one fan stating that they would just consider it as a “big budget fan film.”
‘Uncharted on Netflix is not bad for an action movie,’ wrote another, while someone else said on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Watched the Uncharted film on Netflix, and it wasn’t a bad movie. I loved it!’
But some people were truly buzzing for the offering, as someone wrote: ‘They’ve added Uncharted to Netflix. brb about to go back into my nathan drake era.’
Someone another was sceptical about the casting but decided to give it a go.
‘Uncharted is on Netflix, I’m checking it out despite I still think all the actors were miscast, Tom Holland as Drake and Mark Wahlberg,’ they said.
Mark was originally cast as Drake, but Tom was subsequently cast as the plucky young adventurer in his place.
The 52-year-old The Fighter star told TheWrap of the switcheroo: ‘I was onboard with David O. [Russell] and then we kind of moved on to another filmmaker and then another filmmaker and then I was just kind of like, it was all in limbo.
‘So I was ready if they needed me, and then when I finally got the call they were like, “We’re ready to go,” and I was like, “Cool, who’s the other guy?” I thought are we gonna get Jack [Nicholson]? Tommy Lee Jones? And then all of a sudden they’re like, Tom Holland and I’m like, “For what?” And they said, “For Nathan, you’re gonna be Sully,” and I said, “What?”’
The film’s release was delayed because to the Covid-19 epidemic after it failed to achieve its December 2020 release deadline.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, it made $407.1 million, making it the fifth-highest-grossing video game film of all time.
