The Toy Story spin-off focusing on beloved character Buzz Lightyear is set to rocket into cinema screens in the UK.
Lightyear will tell the origin story of the titular character as he embarks on an intergalactic adventure with a rag-tag crew and his robot companion.
But after the ship is marooned on a hostile planet, Buzz and his crew must find a way back home while facing the evil emperor Zurg.
The film had an initial screening at Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Tuesday, June 14, before its theatrical release.
But when is Lightyear released, who is in it, and will it come to Disney+?
Here’s everything you need to know:
When is Lightyear released?
Lightyear is released in cinemas on Friday, June 17, 2022.
Development for the film started way back in 2016 when director Angus MacLane pitched to Pixar executives the idea of an ‘in-universe’ film about Buzz Lightyear that Andy Davis – Woody’s owner from the original series – would watch in cinemas.
MacLane said while speaking to Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s a straightforward sci-fi action film about the Buzz Lightyear character.
‘In the Toy Story universe, it would be like a movie that maybe Andy would have seen, that would have made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure.’
The animation and visual process were remotely done during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Who is in the cast of Lightyear?
Tim Allen is best known for voicing Buzz in the original Toy Story films, but Lightyear will see a new star take the helm.
Captain America star Chris Evans will voice the titular character and has already faced some controversy in the role.
The Avengers alum slammed critics of a same-sex kiss within the film, calling them ‘idiots’.
He told Reuters: ‘‘Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good.’
Golden Globe and Emmy-award-winning actor James Brolin will star as the film’s main antagonist Zurg.
The pair will be joined by the likes of Taika Waititi, Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, Efren Ramirez, Dale Soules, Uzo Aduba, Mary Lewis, and Isaiah Whitlock Jr.
Is there a trailer?
A trailer for the film was released earlier this year, creating a ‘buzz’ around the film
In the trailer, we see the real-world Buzz speaking as a narrator about being marooned on an alien planet and preparing for a test flight.
We see the galactic adventurer journey through space with David Bowie’s Starman playing in the background.
Viewers get glimpses of the peril and villains Buzz and his crew will face in the new film, as well as his adorable feline companion Sox.
Fans noticed that as well as Buzz’s suit being recreated for the Toy Story spin-off, the box toy Buzz comes in is modelled off the real-life spaceship.
Will Lightyear come to Disney Plus?
An official release date for the Pixar Animation Studios (a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios) film on Disney Plus has not yet been confirmed.
Black Widow came to Disney Plus 89 days after its theatrical release, whereas Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness took only 47 days.
It seems that box office success has a hand to play in how quickly films come to Disney’s streaming service, and as Lightyear is predicted to be a success, fans could be waiting a while.
Fans have estimated that the film could come to Disney Plus in late July or early August.
Lightyear comes to cinemas on Friday, June 17.
