Around a quarter of Vue’s UK cinemas have reduced their opening hours from seven to four days per week, because of difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company says it made the decision in order ‘to ensure that our business is financially well-placed to withstand the uncertainty ahead’.

Cinemas as a whole are struggling, with the release dates of several blockbusters like Jurassic World: Dominion and James Bond film No Time To Die having been pushed back to 2021 and beyond, and some studios opting to release their latest titles on streaming services instead.

Which Vue cinemas will be closed during the week?

The following Vue cinemas will be open from Friday to Monday, and closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, until further notice:

Vue has also had to shut its cinemas in Dublin, Ashbourne and Limerick due to government guidelines. All of Ireland’s cinemas closed on October 7, and will remain shut for at least three weeks.

The rest of Vue’s UK venues will remain open seven days a week.

The pandemic has drastically altered the cinema experience. Vue says it is now staggering film times to reduce congestion, making sure there are empty seats to keep groups socially distant from each other, and customers must wear masks at all times unless they’re eating or drinking.

Screenings are not permitted to begin any later than 10pm, and cinemas cannot sell alcoholic drinks after 10pm either.
