Jerry “The King” Lawler has opened up on working alongside Jim Carrey on 1999 movie Man on the Moon.
The WWE legend played a part in the Andy Kaufman biopic – which saw Carrey in playing the late entertainer – and he insisted the leading man was way off the mark with his interpretation of their friendship.
The film deals with the onscreen rivalry – highlighted by their infamous Late Night With David Letterman fight – but it wasn’t until after Kaufman’s death that fans found out it was all an act and they actually liked each other.
During an interview with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for the WWE Network series Broken Skull Sessions, Lawler said: ‘Jim Carrey went wrong with that, if you ask me… He obviously thought we really didn’t like each other.
‘At one point in time, I called the director off, Milos Forman, who — I mean, you know, he directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus, and all these great movies and everything.
‘And I asked, Milos, ‘Milos, has this guy not read the script? “Surely, does he not realise Andy and I actually in real life were friends?” And he goes, “Oh, Jerry. Jerry. He’s the 800-pound gorilla. What can I do?” And that was the truth at that time.’
The wrestler and commentator compared Carrey’s stature at the time to current Hollywood heavyweight Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but seemed unimpressed with his ‘method acting’.
‘He was the top draw, he was like The Rock today, he was the top name in Hollywood. And he got it in his head, I don’t know if you call it method acting or whatever, he was going to channel Andy Kaufman,’ he added.
‘He became Andy Kaufman for these 80 days that we were on the set filming this movie, so it was crazy.’
There was even one incident – which took place on Jerry’s first day on set – when Carrey apparently took things to an extreme level when he spotted his co-star walking through the Universal Studios lot.
Lawler explained: ‘The very first time I saw him, we’re walking on the set, I’m like a kid in a candy store, the kid from Memphis, I’m in Hollywood, on the set of Universal Studios.
‘We’re walking along and I’m looking around, walking over to this trailer and all of sudden I see this – BAM! This big glass bottle of orange juice or something flying through the air, almost hits me, splashes all over, there’s juice all over the place.
‘I’m like, “What the heck?” And I look over, and there’s Jim Carrey dressed as Andy Kaufman: “I’ll get you Lawler! I’ll get you Lawler!” And then he runs inside the trailer. And that was my first introduction to making a movie!’
