Zendaya has revealed she’s ‘full of nervousness’ as her film Malcolm and Marie is released, issuing a heartfelt thank you to the cast and crew who worked amid the pandemic.
The Spider-Man actress stars alongside John David Washington in the highly-anticipated Netflix movie. She has also produced and co-financed it.
Sharing her feelings on Twitter, she wrote: ‘Full of excitement and nervousness as this lil movie we made in lockdown with people I love is coming out in the next hour.
‘Nervousness for a few reasons. Normally I’m pretty self-critical and that leads me to be far too fearful to make things myself or trust myself enough to… even try.
‘This is really my first time believing that maybe I could,’ she said. ‘This is my first time being a leading lady, but also my first time being this creatively involved in something, producing something, co-financing something, owning something and sharing it all with my crew.’
Zendaya, 24, went on to reveal the movie was made with a skeleton crew.
‘We made this as a family, shot it in 14 days with a 22 person crew I am eternally grateful for,’ she explained. ‘For their talent, their time, their hard work, and their willingness to believe in this film.
‘If there’s anything to learn from this year, and I hope from our little movie… it’s gratitude for every moment and every person we get to love. To stop and acknowledge the people in our lives who make it possible to do the work we do and honestly, make life worth living.’
She added: ‘It’s gratitude for every moment and every person we get to love.
‘To stop and acknowledge the people in our lives who make it possible to do the work we do and honestly, make life worth living. It comes in many forms and sometimes it’s just a thank you.’
Zendaya and John star as the titular characters as the film delves into the lives of a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) as they return home following a celebratory movie premiere.
Malcolm awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success and the films start on that high before the evening suddenly takes a turn.
Revelations about their relationship (and past relationships) begin to surface and the pair air out their grievances.
While a conversation was sparked ahead of the film’s release about the age gap between John David, 36, and Zendaya, he brushed off the criticism.
The Tenet actor said: ‘I wasn’t concerned about it because she is a woman. People are going to see in this film how much of a woman she is.
He added to Variety: ‘Some of the stories she’s shared about what she’s had to go through with Twitter and everything. I appreciated her wisdom and discernment when it comes to this business. I admire that.’
Malcolm and Marie is available to stream on Netflix now.
