Boris Johnson’s speech at the Tory party conference today took an unexpected twist when the prime minister casually quoted M People lyrics while telling us all about his weight loss journey.
The Conservative party leader spoke for 30 minutes about his plans to help first-time buyers get on the property ladder with the Generation Buy scheme and how the government expects to rebuild the country following the coronavirus pandemic.
All very important topics of course but for much of social media, it was Boris reciting inspirational lyrics from M People’s classic bop Search For The Hero which was really the highlight.
Responding to speculation about his health after battling Covid-19, Boris said in the virtual conference: ‘I’ve read a lot of nonsense really about how my own bout of Covid has somehow robbed me of my mojo.
‘Of course this is self-evident drivel, the kind of propaganda you’d expect from people who don’t want this government to succeed, who wanted to stop us delivering Brexit and all our other manifesto pledges. I can tell you no power on Earth is going to do that.’
The PM then vehemently refuted any critics of his ‘athletic abilities’ before reeling off a list of sports he apparently exceeds in, such as arm wrestling.
Boris continued: ‘And yet, I have to admit, the reason why I had such a nasty experience with the disease is that, although I was superficially in the peak of health when I caught it, I had a very common underlying condition…
‘My friends, I was too fat and I’ve since lost 26 pounds.’
Dropping the punchline, he added: ‘You can imagine that in bags of sugar and I’m going to continue that diet because you’ve got to search for the hero inside yourself in the hope that the individual is slimmer.’
Twitter reacted accordingly with one tweeting in shock: ‘Did… did… did Boris Johnson just quote M People?!’
‘Breaking News. Boris Johnson replacing Heather Small in M People,’ another quipped.
‘PM Boris Johnson is quoting M People lyrics in his speech to the Tory Conference. Christ on a bike!’ one tweeted.
Another weighed in: ‘Watched one minute of Boris Johnson’s speech and he challenged people to an arm wrestle, leg wrestle and the then quoted M People by saying “Search for the Hero inside yourself” needless to say I switched it off.’
‘Did @BorisJohnson just quote M People “search for the hero inside yourself” there you have it, if you want to loose 26lbs and beat covid that’s what you gotta do,’ one quipped.
It comes just hours after health secretary Matt Hancock went viral thanks to a resurfaced interview in which he declared himself a grime fan.
