Chika Cheekily Accepts First GLAAD Award: ‘What Can I Say? I Deserve It’

The GLAAD Media Awards may not have started yet, but that’s not stopping Chika from celebrating her first-ever win at an awards show.

On Thursday afternoon (April 8), GLAAD announced via Twitter that Chika took home the GLAAD Media Award for outstanding breakthrough music artist, a new category celebrating artists who rose to prominence this past year and “whose songs, music videos, or live performances have made a significant impact on LGBTQ visibility and acceptance.”

In the video included with the tweet, Chika, dressed in a white suit and tails appearing on a stage for her performance at the awards show, gave a hilarious, sarcastic acceptance speech where she thanked the one person that made this all possible: herself. “What can I say? I deserve it,” she said with a smirk. “I work hard. Me and only me, I don’t have a team, I don’t have parents. I was forged under a tree, and then fire.”

The rapper continued her tongue-in-cheek speech, speaking about the privilege of being an entirely self-sufficient star who needs help from absolutely no one else. “I made it here by the Northern winds, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to sit here and sing these songs and not give anyone credit, especially the people who gave birth to me and my management. So thank you guys, from Chika and Chika only, not Warner, and not the band behind me. Just me.”

Chika did eventually take a moment to laugh the bit off and quickly gave a shoutout to “my mom and dad, to my girl, all that stuff,” before sending in one last jab as she left the stage, saying, “Appreciate it, I deserve it.”

The rapper was nominated for the award alongside fellow LGBTQ artists Arca, FLETCHER, Keiynan Lonsdale, Kidd Kenn, Orville Peck, Phoebe Bridgers, Rina Sawayama, Trixie Mattel and Victoria Monét. GLAAD will announce the winner of their other music award, outstanding music artist, during Thursday night’s ceremony, where artists including Adam Lambert, Brandy Clark, Halsey, Kehlani, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Pabllo Vittar, Peppermint, Ricky Martin and Sam Smith are nominated.

The 2021 GLAAD Media Awards will stream on GLAAD’s YouTube page starting at 8 p.m. ET. Check out Chika’s full acceptance speech below:
