Ed Sheeran has officially smashed a new chart record by becoming the first British solo artist to spend a full year at number one with his combined hits.
We’re still getting our heads round this one.
The Bad Habits hitmaker has seen astonishing success over the past decade and he’s definitely not slowing down anytime soon as he’s just achieved his overall 52nd week at the top spot in the Official Singles chart.
Ed has had 10 number one hits from 2014 to 2021, with the longest being a stretch of 14 weeks.
Added to the 11 weeks (so far) that Bad Habits has spent in the top spot and his various other hits (eight weeks for I Don’t Care, six weeks for Perfect, five weeks for Take Me Back To London, Ed has spent a whole year at number one.
Only two other musical acts in history have spent longer at number one – Elvis Presley with 80 weeks and The Beatles with 69 weeks.
While the 30-year-old has taken a break from the spotlight over the past few weeks as he and his wife Cherry welcomed their baby daughter, he’s officially back in business as he announced his new album, = (Equals).
The upcoming record is set for release in October and we can only apologise to anyone with music coming out that month.
The star wrote on Instagram: ‘I started writing and recording this album June 2017. Its been a long, long process. I’ve been through love, loss, new life, grief and everything in between during the whole period of writing it, and I feel like it’s really a coming of age record.
‘I’ve never been more proud of a body of work, or more excited/nervous for you all to hear it.’

Ed added that the next single off the album is called Visiting Hours, which is dedicated to his friend and mentor Michael Gudinski, who died in March.
He also Ed revealed that the track list consists of Tides, Shivers, First Times, Bad Habits, Overpass Graffiti, The Joker and The Queen, Leave Your Life, Collide, 2step, Stop The Rain, Love In Slow Motion, Visiting Hours, Sandman and Be Right Now.
We’re also predicting yet another number one album and it shouldn’t be too hard for the singer as all four of his previous records have smashed it on the charts.
2014’s x was a particular smash, selling a mind-boggling 7,900,000 copies worldwide.
Meanwhile, the release of ÷ in 2017 led to a change in how the Official Charts Company compiles the charts, after the songs from the album dominated the UK top 20.
