BTS’s golden maknae is growing up.
ARMY around the world have been marking September 1 by getting Jungkook trending, as the K-pop star celebrates his 23rd birthday.
Ever since September rolled in Korean time, ‘Happy Birthday Jungkook’ has been trending on Twitter, as BTS fans celebrated the youngest member of the band turning 23.
The social media site was flooded with fancams of Jeon Jung-kook and pledges to stream his solo song Euphoria – and that’s just the online activity.
In the days leading up to Jungkook’s birthday, posters of the singer popped up around Seoul on buses and in subway stations as fans bought out billboards to mark the occasion.
Perhaps the most impressive effort saw pictures of Jungkook displayed on the ferris wheel at Korean theme park Everland.
And it wasn’t just in Jungkook’s home country that ads were bought out, as billboards were seen everywhere from Italy to Myanmar.
Suddenly, the Colin the Caterpillar cake we got for our last birthday doesn’t seem so extravagant…
Of course, the biggest gift that the ARMY gave to Jungkook on his birthday was BTS’s first ever Billboard Hot 100 number one, as their new single Dynamite made it to the top of the charts.
Jungkook, RM, Jimin, J-Hope, Suga, V and Jin became the first ever all-Korean group to make it to number one in the States, as their first fully English language single racked up 33.9 million U.S. streams and 300,000 sales in its first week.
It’s a major achievement for the band, who managed to hit the biggest digital sales week for any act in three years.
Dynamite also broke the top five on the UK charts with the single, which they released in the hope of cheering up fans at a time of hardship.
Speaking at a press conference last week, Jimin said: ‘Everyone in the world is going through tough times right now, nobody expected this, and we ourselves couldn’t do a lot of the things we had planned. We really wanted to be on stage, we wanted to meet our fans.
‘As artists we felt empty and helpless and we needed a breakthrough to overcome this emptiness, and we came across this opportunity to try something new. Dynamite is a song that can lift anyone’s spirits.’
Dynamite comes ahead of BTS’s new album, set for release later this year.
