John Legend’s “Never Break” is one of the most affecting odes to the human spirit released in 2020, and on Wednesday night (Oct. 14), the veteran R&B singer-songwriter delivered the song to the masses at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards — while also dedicating the performance to his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
During the performance, Legend (who was introduced by host 2020 Billboard Music Awards host Kelly Clarkson as “one of my favorite people on this planet”) uttered the words “This is for Chrissy” before singing the moving song while seated at a grand piano. Wearing an all-white suit, Legend looked elegant and steady, navigating a personally emotional moment with aplomb.
“Never Break” was featured on Legend’s seventh studio album, Bigger Love, which reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200 albums chart upon its June release. Along with Clarkson, Legend is serving as a coach on the new season of The Voice.
