Kelly Clarkson kicked off the 2020 Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday (Oct. 14) evening with a powerful collaboration that set a high bar for the awards show. The 2020 BBMAs host joined forces with Pentatonix and the legendary Sheila E. for a cover of Steve Winwood’s No. 1 Hot 100 smash “Higher Love.” With Kelly’s soulful voice melding seamlessly with the group’s harmonies and Sheila E. pounding away on percussion, it was an energetic performance of an enduring song (the Kygo/Whitney Houston version topped the Dance Club Songs chart last year) with a timely message.
“That was crazy fun,” Clarkson said after it wrapped. “Music connects us to each other. From virtual living room dance parties to neighborhood balcony concerts, music unites us.” This is Clarkson’s third time hosting the BBMAs.
