Speaking to SiriusXM, the star said (as reported by NME): ‘For me – and I don’t wanna sound ungrateful because I know there’s a lot of people out there that are struggling because of this Covid – where I live, it’s all service industry.
‘And, obviously, the music industry is tough – it’s taken a big hit.’
He added Metallica are ‘road dogs’, saying: ‘[you’re] either on the road or you’re writing. So the obvious thing is, well, we’re not on the road. Start writing.’
He continued: ‘So [I’ve written] tons of material. And I’m sure there’s lots of musicians out there that are just like, OK what can I do? I’m gonna write and just get into that, which I love doing.’
The band today release S&M2, their live album with San Francisco Symphony.
In other Metallica news, James revealed on The Howard Stern Show this month that he’s a fan of Lady Gaga.
Recalling their joint 2017 Grammys performance, he said: ‘I just respect her as an artist. She was there for two hours before we even got there, working on her moves and thinking stuff up.
Drummer Lars Ulrich added: ‘Lady Gaga, in particular, she loves metal. She was telling me that Metal Militia, which is this deep cut on our first album Kill ‘Em All, was her favourite song back in the day.’
Another iconic rock band who may have new material on the way is Guns N’ Roses.
Lead guitarist Slash recently told Sweetwater of 2020 lockdown: ‘I’ve been pretty much a homebody, but I’ve been back and forth between my studio in the house and doing a lot of writing and recording on my own.’
