Seven years after his death at the age of 57, pop music great Prince will have a major US highway named after him.
The singer and guitarist, famed for classics like as Purple Rain and When Doves Cry, died in 2016 from an accidental opioid overdose.
He was born in Minnesota and sold over 100 million albums worldwide before being elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
Paisley Park, Prince’s private residence and museum, was the scene of some of his most renowned recordings and will now confront a road named after him.
Arboretum Boulevard will be renamed Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway over a seven-mile length of Minnesota State Highway 5.
Furthermore, the new road sign will be purple, which was the characteristic hue of Prince’s attire, instruments, and visual material.
In a statement mourning Prince, Minnesota senator Julia Coleman stated, ‘Prince was a great genius, a visionary artist who stretched the limits of music and society.’
The statement went on to praise Prince’s artistry and originality, as well as his ability to push boundaries ‘in ways that will never be forgotten.’
‘His influence can be heard in the work of countless musicians who came after him, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists to this day.’
Prince possessed 65,000 square feet of Paisley Park before his death, where he produced his iconic albums Sign O the Times and Lovesexy.
During his career, 16 of his singles entered the top ten in the United Kingdom, with his 1994 smash The Most Beautiful Girl in the World reaching number one for two weeks.
Five of his 40 studio albums, including Come in 1994, charted at number one in the United Kingdom.
Prince’s songs was made available on TikTok throughout the epidemic in order to continue ‘breaking boundaries’ even after his death.
‘It is our goal that a new generation of worldwide fans may find significance in Prince’s music and be encouraged to create,’ said Prince’s estate counsel Troy Carter.
