Fleetwood Mac may be a Grammy award-winning band that have been rocking out since 1967 and have legions of fans worldwide, but even they are not above the success that comes from a viral TikTok video.
TikTok is redefining how music is marketed to fans. Thanks to the platform’s algorithm and millions of subscribers, songs used as the backing track for the app’s many ‘challenges’ can quickly be catapulted to overnight success.
Following in the recent footsteps of rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, who saw their song WAP top the Billboard Hot 100 after a choreography challenge to the song become a viral TikTok sensation, Fleetwood Mac are now seeing their 1977 hit Dreams climb back into the charts thanks to the video sharing platform.
The British-American rock band’s song is the latest tune to accompany a TikTok challenge, now known as the Dreams challenge – but what is it?
What is the Fleetwood Mac Dreams TikTok challenge?
The Fleetwood Mac Dreams challenge was born after TikTok user @420doggface208, real name Nathan Apodaca, posted a clip of himself riding a skateboard and drinking cranberry juice whilst listening to the classic tune and singing along.
His serene way of gliding along the road whilst listening to the song captured the attention of fellow TikTok users who were quick to praise Nathan for his fun and relaxed video.
The clip has now been viewed nearly 22 million times and sparked a range of copycat videos, with other TikTok users taking to their skateboards to cruise along a street whilst sipping on their favourite drink.
Yesterday, even Mick Fleetwood himself took on the TikTok Dreams challenge.
The 73-year-old filmed himself, cranberry juice in hand, skating along with his iconic band’s hit playing in the background.
As 60% of TikTok users are between the ages of 16-24, the viral video challenge will have no doubt introduced a whole new generation of music fans to the delights of Fleetwood Mac.
The challenge has sent Dreams back into the charts and the hit is currently ranked 85 in the UK’s official music chart.
