British Airways launches ‘nap pods’ for passengers who need a kip before their flight

Do you struggle to sleep on planes?

Or perhaps you just want to arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and recharged?

British Airways has launched a new service that is, quite literally, the stuff of dreams.

The airline has unveiled some futuristic ‘nap pods’ – which are essentially cosy little containers, where travellers can take a 20-minute kip before boarding their flight.

Found in the ‘Forty Winks’ nap lounge, passengers can lie down in ‘the world’s first chair designed exclusively for power napping.’

All they need to do is set a timer (so they don’t miss their flight) and then nod off.

There’s also an adjustable privacy visor, a reclining option and audio content to help users drift off.

Sadly, these pods are only available for First Class travellers.

However, because the airline has temporarily closed some of its lounges, the service is currently open to all lounge-eligible customers – and there’s no additional cost.

The pods are now available at the airline’s First Lounge at London Heathrow and will soon be rolled out by Concorde Room at London Heathrow Terminal 5 and New York’s JFK Terminal 7.

Tom Stevens, British Airways’ director of brand and customer experience, said: ‘We can’t wait to welcome our customers back after a very difficult year, and we’re always looking for new ideas to support our customers’ health and wellbeing pre-flight.’

The idea came about after the airline surveyed lounge guests in 2019 asking them what features they’d like to see in future – and sleep pods topped the list.

If you’re looking for inspiration when international travel resumes, these 10 hotel rooftops from the 2021 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards are a good place to start.
