Travel is firmly back on the agenda. But after a couple of years without our regular jaunts abroad, we might have forgotten how to pack. There’s an art to it.

Not only do you need to think about how to pack efficiently, to make the most of limited space and weight, we also need to be smart about what we pack – and where it goes in the bag.

There’s a lot to think about. Thankfully, a member of Emirates Cabin Crew, Rhiannon Corbett, is on hand to share her top tips – so you can start packing like a pro ahead of your next getaway:

Make a packing list

‘A packing checklist is essential,’ says Rhiannon. ‘Not only will it help you save time packing, but it will also cut down on the possibility of forgetting anything important needed for your travels.’

Pack with plenty of time to spare

Staying organised and prepared is essential for a successful trip.

‘If you pack well in advance, you are less likely to forget all of those smaller items and essentials to take with you on your trip,’ she adds. ‘You will also feel less stressed before your flight, with everything ready to go.’

Plan your packing based on the weather

Rhiannon suggests you always check the weather before you travel to prevent overpacking – and to ensure you are packing appropriately for the climate.

‘Try to pack versatile items which can be used in more than one way e.g. clothes that are flexible enough to cover a variety of situations,’ she says. ‘This is a smart way to keep your packing list to a minimum and give yourself enough room for everything you need.’

Pack travel adaptors

Rhiannon says: ‘It’s a good idea to carry a selection of travel adaptors for all your different devices, as you never know whether they will be easily available in the country you are flying to.’

Always leave extra space

If you can, Rhiannon says you should always try to leave space in your suitcase.

‘This will leave room for any souvenirs or extra shopping you might do in your trip, and this way you won’t have to worry about fitting it back in your case.’

Utilise space in your suitcase

‘Whenever possible, you should try pack your suitcase to maximise space. For instance:

  • DO consider the benefits of rolling your clothes rather than folding. Tightly rolling clothes into compact pieces not only allows for fitting more items into the suitcase but it also cuts down on creases.
  • DO try use packing cubes, packing cubes are a great way to compress your clothing and accessories to maximise space in your suitcase, organise your items and prevent items moving around while traveling.
  • DO wear your heaviest items rather than packing them, wearing your bulky items such as coats and jackets can help save up crucial space in your suitcase.
  • DON’T over pack, one of the best ways to pack a suitcase to maximise space is to pack only what you actually intend to use, any items you forget or emergency items can usually be purchased at the destination of your travel.’

Travel-friendly toiletries

Rhiannon suggests considering refillable travel bottles.

‘Not only are they good for the environment, but they also prevent you from taking more product than you really need,’ she explains. ‘Don’t forget to label them with a smudge-proof pen.

‘Keep toiletries within reach, as this will make it much easier and more convenient for you to grab items that will help you feel refreshed after a long flight.’

Another top tip is to keep your toiletries in a clear cosmetic bag.

‘Choosing a waterproof cosmetic bag will not only make it easier to see everything you have packed, but it will prevent any spills from leaking into the rest of your bag,’ she says.

Bring a good book

‘Packing a good book is a great way to kick back and give time for yourself whilst travelling, plus it’s an ideal activity to do before going to sleep,’ says Rhiannon.
