Netflix viewers tuning in to watch the new mystery drama 1899 are being urged to change a particular setting to help make sense of the plot.
The new multilanguage series, starring Emily Beecham and Aneurin Barnard, follows a group of European migrants travelling from London on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City.
But their odyssey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea.
While the thriller has been widely praised for the inclusion of many languages, viewers may have difficulty understanding the storyline if watching with the audio dubbed into English.
Instead, many have encouraged fellow users to stream the drama with the English original audio option on top of the closed caption subtitles.
‘Watched the first 6 episodes of 1899 straight through last night and I’m preparing to finish it off right now,’ one said.
‘So very good. Builds the otherworldly mystery of it all at just the right pace. Different languages galore, subtitles with the original dub is a must.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another advised: ‘Head’s up to any of my fellow horror/mystery fans watching 1899. Watch it subbed. The dub cuts out the context of what language folks are originally speaking in this cast of international travelers, which is important to some of the characters’ backstories and misunderstandings.’
Netflix subscribers can adjust their settings by clicking in the bottom right-hand corner and selecting the speech bubble icon.
1899 is streaming now on Netflix.
