A Very British Scandal kicked off tonight on BBC One, and features some gorgeous scenery – here’s everything you need to know about the filming locations of the show.

The three-parter, written by Sarah Phelps, tells the rise and fall of Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll (Claire Foy), who was caught up in a very public divorce battle with her husband Ian Campbell (Paul Bettany).

Set in the 1960s, it also provides a heap of gorgeous fashion and enviable parties, all set against a stunning Scottish backdrop.

When Margaret makes the move up to Scotland, she puts her energy into restoring the castle to its former glory, persuading her beloved father to give her the money for the project.

But where was the show filmed, and can you visit Inveraray Castle, where the Duke and Duchess of Argyll lived?

A BBC statement stated filming took place ‘all across the UK’ but it mostly sticks to locations in Scotland and London.

Writer Sarah Phelps confirmed the bulk of filming was carried out at Inveraray Castle, where the actual Duke and Duchess of Argyll lived together.

The castle sits close to Loch Fyne in the Scottish highlands, making for a beautiful backdrop for the drama.

Speaking at a recent Q&A, she told Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘The fact we were able to film and crews were able to turn up and film and as I believe it the current Duke and Duchess were extremely welcoming.’

Sarah even detailed the long-lasting impact of Margaret’s knack for interior design.

She continued: ‘When we told them what we were making, like, I think I’d probably paraphrase, but I heard that they said, “I think we’ve got bathrooms because of Margaret!”

Actress Claire went on to share how accommodating the current occupants were, commenting: ‘They were really generous and really kind.’

They even shared an evening together, in which some old stories were told about headline-hitting pair.

‘They were so generous, there was no kind of dishing of the dirt or anything like that, but there was a scrapbook of the front pages of the newspapers at that time, that wasn’t done by her – which was ginormous – and they were awful front pages.’

The notorious couple also owned a swanky apartment in Mayfair, where Foy was seen filming in June earlier this year.

Can you visit Inveraray Castle?

Yes, you can visit the gorgeous location, as it is indeed open to visitors, however, it is currently closed until March 28, 2022.

Those who want to go and see the Castle for themselves can visit between six months next year, with it keeping its doors open until October 31 2022.

Visitors can either opt to explore just the gardens, or peek inside the Castle too.

Tours around the interior are also offered, showcasing the dining room, bedrooms, history room and famous weapon room to guests.

Inveraray Castle may be familiar to fans of period dramas, as it was also chosen as the location for the Downton Abbey Christmas 2012 episode, acting as the fictional Duneagle Castle.

A Very British Scandal continues tomorrow at 9pm on BBC One.
