Just when you thought Adele couldn’t break your heart anymore, she gets reunited with the English teacher who changed her life on An Audience with Adele and makes the TV moment of the year.

As the clip of Adele weeping in the arms of Ms McDonald continues to do the rounds on social media, with thousands of fans sharing their personal stories with heroic teachers, it’s now been revealed the moment was inspired by Ian Wright.

Producer Ben Winston – the man who also brought us the Friends Reunion and Adele’s tell-all interview with Orpah Winfrey – shared some behind-the-scenes gossip from the ITV special on his Instagram Stories, confirming it took five weeks to track down Ms McDonald, hoping to recreate the moment footballer Ian was reunited with his teacher, Mr Pigden.

Ian famously broke down when in his ITV4 real-life documentary he was reunited with his childhood hero after believing Mr Pigden had died.

He later dedicated his 2016 autobiography to Mr Pigden, who died two years later, aged 95.

Ben confirmed it was Ian’s notoriously heartfelt moment with his teacher that inspired the most special moment from An Audience with Adele.

‘Take a moment to watch this special moment from our Adele show this weekend,’ he told fans.

‘Unreal work from Fulwell 73 Prodictions team to find Ms. McDonald… it was not easy, but than goodness we found her.’

He added: ‘Inspired by one of the best TV moments of all time – Ian Wright and Mr Pigden.’

Adele wept in a similar fashion to Ian as she was reunited with Ms Peacock after actress Dame Emma Thompson asked the Easy On Me singer who inspired her when she was younger.

Adele then named her English teacher Ms McDonald from Chestnut Grove School in Balham, and explained: ‘She left in year eight but she got me really into literature, I’ve always been obsessed with English and obviously now I write lyrics. But she also did street dance, I was too scared to go in, but like in the canteen they used to do these dances and stuff like that.

‘She was so bloody cool, so engaging, and she really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us and stuff like that. She used to have all these gold bracelets and gold rings. She was bloody cool and so relatable and likeable, that I really looked forward to my English lessons.’

Emma then surprised Adele by inviting Ms McDonald on stage as the pair hugged and sobbed.

The superstar asked for Ms McDonald’s phone number so they could say in touch, before Alan Carr had to fill in for the singer while she reapplied her make-up, butchering her ballad Make You Feel My Love in a very relatable fashion.

An Audience with Adele is available to stream on ITV Hub now.
