After Life season 3: Release date, cast and trailer for Ricky Gervais Netflix series

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of season 3 (Picture: Natalie Seery/Netflix)

After Life soon returns for its final outing as fans will have to wave goodbye to Ricky Gervais’ hit show after three tearjerking seasons.

The series, which Ricky also writes, produces and directs, follows the life of Tony, who works as a journalist at the fictional Tambury Gazette newspaper.

His life is turned upside down after his wife Lisa, played by Kerry Godliman, dies from breast cancer.

It was confirmed this week the programme would be back in just a matter of days, with a trailer landing over the weekend.

Here’s everything you need to know about the final season of the Netflix black comedy.

When is After Life season 3 coming out?

Ricky, Brandy the dog, and After Life will return on January 14 to Netflix.

All eight episodes will be released at once, for viewers to binge watch at their pleasure.

Who is in the cast?

All the main cast members of season two are set to return for season three, for one last hoorah.

Gervais will return as widow Tony, who is now navigating his father’s death to dementia amid his existing struggles with his grief.

However, there looks to be some sunshine on the horizon as love interest Emma (Ashley Jensen) – who works in his late father’s care home – will be back and more prominent in season three.

The team of the Tambury Gazette, including Lenny (Tony Way), Kath (Diane Morgan) and Sandy (Mandeep Dhillon) will also be sticking around for more, overseen by Tony’s brother-in-law Matt (Tom Basden) who remains in his editor role.

Postman Pat (no not that one) played by Joe Wilkinson and Roxy (Roisin Conaty) may be an item too, after Tony set the singletons up in season two.

We will also be reunited with fellow widow Anne (Penelope Wilton) who Tony continues to confide in in his regular visits to the cemetery.

Of course, the journalist’s late wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) will appear regularly via video tapes and flashbacks, which are sure to make emotions run high.

Last but not least, who could forget Anti, the very good dog who plays Tony’s companion, Brandy.

Is there a trailer?

Yes! A trailer was released on Saturday for season three on Netflix’s social media pages.

Alongside the tweet, the caption read: ‘The official trailer for the final season of AFTER LIFE is here. Remember, the dog does not die. We promise. On Netflix 14 Jan.’

It’s not completely clear what will happen in season three, but the trailer shows things will pick up shortly after Tony’s father died of dementia in his nursing home at the end of season two.

Will this be the final season?

Unfortunately, this will be the final season of After Life after Gervais confirmed it would be coming to an end this time around.

The star stressed in May 2020 that the third chapter will ‘definitely be the last.’

Breaking the news on Twitter of a season three, he said: ‘Because so many of you watched #AfterLife2 so quickly and made it Number 1 again, the nice people at @Netflix have suggested that I get off my fat a**e and do another season.

‘This is all your fault.’

Seasons 1 and 2 of After Life are available on Netflix and season 3 begins on January 14.
